Magickal Herb Uses

The use of herbs in magic is as old as time itself. Their magical properties have been handed down to us through the ages by wise healers and witches who understood how to use this often powerful magic. This folk magic knowledge can be used in Wiccan ritual and spellcasting in a variety of ways.

The witch often combines them with other herbs of similar association to blend their magic together. Healing herbs can be blended with protective ones, herbs for luck can be combined with herbs for prosperity, and so on. It is a good idea to experiment with combinations so that your spell work is as effective as it can be.

Herbs can be burned like incense to release their powerful aromas. This is done by sprinkling them over a burning charcoal disk in a heat-safe censor or cauldron. While most herbs do have a pleasant smell, there are a few which are not so enjoyable, but still have a very powerful effect on your magic.

Wiccans usually love to work with herbs for their versatility and natural mystical powers. They can be sprinkled around the home, placed on the ritual altar, added to charm or mojo bags, carried with you on your person, or even placed in the glove compartment of your car or in your wallet. You can be as creative in your herbal magick as you like, but please do remember that certain herbs can be toxic or cause adverse effects if taken into the body. If you plan to use your magical herbs internally, it is always a good idea to research it first and if in doubt, ask a doctor or professional herbalist.

Also, if you plan to leave herbs in a place that they may come into contact with pets, such as when sprinkled around the home or yard, it is best to make sure that the animals will not be harmed by them. Mistletoe is not a good idea to leave where your beloved familiar can ingest it.

Witches use the mortar and pestle to grind and blend herbs. Remember, if your intention in your ritual or spell is to bring something into your life, the grinding motion should be done clockwise, also called deosil. If your magical intention is to rid yourself of something or banish, the motion should be counter-clockwise, or widdershins.

A boline, a curved and usually white-handled knife, is used by many Wiccans to harvest herbs. Before taking the herb, it is best to thank the Mother Goddess for giving it to you. Many witches will also leave a seed of some kind in its place. Magickal herbs are best if gathered during the waxing or full moon and should be kept in a sealed container to keep them fresh.
