The Witch's Pendulum

Pendulums have been used for hundreds of years for divination. Most witches believe that the pendulum is a way to communicate between your conscious and unconscious mind, or between yourself and whatever gods and goddesses you work with. Learning to use your pendulum will require time, practice and determination, just like any other skill, but in time you can learn new truths and gain wisdom about yourself and the world around you.

Basic Pendulum Instructions and Techniques

1. Hold the pendulum loosely, with the chain between your thumb and forefinger. Let the pendulum hang as low as you would like, wherever it feels the most natural.

2. Keeping your upper body and back straight, rest your elbows on the table. Let your fingers and wrist hang without tension. Some witches like to rest the back of their hand on their forehead, where the third eye chakra is located.

3. Sit with your feet flat on the floor and your other hand resting on the table. Relax and breath deeply.

4. Clear your mind of all distractions.

First you must determine what directional swings mean YES and NO for you. For most witches, clockwise spinning indicates YES, and couterclockwise indicates NO. These may be different for you. To find out, you can ask your pendulum to show you what YES looks like and what NO looks like, or you may ask yes or no questions that you already know answers to and see which way the pendulum swings in response.

Many witches work with pendulum charts, which can be purchased or made. There are many books devoted to charts and working with them, but they are by no means necessary to use your pendulum. The most important thing to remember is that different techniques work for different witches. The things listed in a book or on this page may not be the way for you and you must work with your pendulum to develop your own relationship with it.
