Wiccan Ritual Tools
Amulet: A magically charged object that deflects specific, usually negative energies. Generally, a protective object.
Athame: Pronounced "ah-THAW-may" The athame is one of the most important ritual tools in Wicca. It usually has a double-edged blade and a dark handle. The athame is used to direct personal power during ritual workings. It is a representation of male principles and along with the chalice, is used to symbolically perform the sacred marriage representing the union of the God and Goddess. It is also used to cast the circle in ritual, much as the wand is used, but the athame should not be used to actually cut anything.
Boline: The white-handled knife, used in magick and Wiccan ritual for practical purposes such as cutting herbs.
Book Of Shadows: Your Book of Shadows, or grimoire, is the place where you record all your Wiccan rituals, spells, and any lists of corresponding herbs or gemstones. Many Wiccans also record their tarot readings and other divinations here.
Bell: Used to call the four quarters in Wiccan ritual.
Candles: Candle magic is part of most Wiccan rituals and spells. They are often annointed with oil and carved with Pagan symbols, Runes, or writings in the Witches' Alphabet. The image candles of the human form can be representations of the God and Goddess, or of a person related to the magickal work.
Cauldron: Used in ritual and spells for burning incense, mixing herbs for spells, or for offerings to the God and Goddess.
Chalice: As a symbol of the Goddess, the chalice during ritual is used along with the athame during the symbolic Sacred Marriage, and is considered one of the most sacred tools in Wicca.
Censer: A heatproof container in which incense is smoldered. An incense burner. It symbolizes the Element of Air.
Pendulum: A divinatory device consisting of a string attached to a heavy object, such as a quartz crystal, root or ring. The free end of the string is held in the hand, and the elbow steadied against a flat surface, and a question is asked. The movement of the heavy object's swing determines the answer. There are many methods of deciphering the pendulum's movement; use those that work best for you. It is a tool which contacts the psychic mind.
Talisman: An object, such as an amethyst crystal, ritually charged with power to attract a specific force or energy to its bearer.
Wand: In witchcraft and Wicca, the wand is one of the most important and personal tools. The magickal wand is often used instead of an athame, although many witches use both. The athame is then typically used for casting the circle and the wand is used for calling the elements at the Four Corners. The athame and the wand can be used for both these ritual purposes and both can be used for directing raised energy in the circle.
